Big Win

TCU just beat Clemson 14-10....close win but we needed it if we are going to bust the BCS party.

Ashley and I wore our TCU shirts out while we ran errands before the game. Some girl in a Clemson shirt tried to talk smack (I didn't hear her but Ashley did)....I wonder what she's saying now biatch!

1 AM in Paris, 6 back home

About to go to bed in Paris, I'm beat. But we've eaten good phone and I saw the Eiffel Tower go all sparkly...

Drivers in Paris make New York look like a go kart track.

Wish Ashley was here.

packing up

I'm heading back to Paris tomorrow for some meetings...should be fun, but I will miss the wife. We just got started with the whole marriage thing, so I'm not 100% excited to go.

But it's only until Sunday...

However, do miss the TCU season opener versus Virginia. Go Frogs!

been awhile

OK, haven't blogged in awhile, but I just got married, we went on our honeymoon, and school just started.

But the (new) wife and I are sitting here watching Glee on Fox, it's pretty funny.

Too many idiots

Can you believe it?!?! People with better grades get more jobs!

I see a paper apron and a spatula in this girl's future.

www.cnn.com/2009/US/08/03/new.york.jobless.graduate/index.html

it's official

So I took so extra time at lunch today and met Ashley at the Colin County Clerk's office and picked up a marriage license! WOW!

This is more real than when we got the save the date magnet with our pictures on it....

On countdown

I hope my future bride appreciates the extra effort I am putting in prior to our wedding and honeymoon..just got back from boot camp and I am beat. It's like high school football all over again. Except Mason and Amy aren't as mean as my coaches were (and they don't swear as much).

Anyways, August 15 is coming up. If you are interested in where we are going on our honeymoon (and promise not to tell Ashley) just email me and I'll send you the link.

Summer Movies, Part 5: Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

While not as streamlined as the first film, this second installation is still an action filled blockbuster. The involved history of the Fallen and the Primes' earlier visits to Earth were a little far-fetched (I know, I know the existence of autonomous alien robots living among us is probably a stretch in of itself) and the addition of multiple (human and robot) new characters whose existence is only for comic relief was unnecessary.

However, while for some reason unseen in the first film, Optimus Prime dominates everything in his path. In the original, Optimus almost seemed weak and pathetic versus a newly unfrozen Megatron, but here he vanquishes multiple combatants with ease.

And again Bumblebee proves he is much improved over the VW bug of the historic cartoons.

And no matter what anyone says, I think Will and I would agree, Megan Fox is a very accomplished actress (and smart too)...

Summer Movies, Part 4: The Hangover

Have you ever laughed so hard your skull hurt?

Well, considering I saw this movie the day after a two-day bachelor party extravaganza I assume one could argue that my head hurt from more than laughter...but I digress.

This raucous tale of three (formerly four) friends the day after what one could only dub the GREATEST BACHELOR PARTY OF ALL TIME EVEN BETTER THAN THE ONES THE ROMAN BACHELORS HAD!!!!! (I can only tell by the "pictures" they show at the end of the film)

In all honesty this movie is up there with Old School, not just because it is freakin' hilarious and presents the honest truth that boys don't grow up, they just throw better parties, but I think it could launch Bradley Cooper's career the same way Will Ferrell's was created. He is great in the lead, when in the past he has been relegated to the "bad guy" roles in movies like Wedding Crashers (another great).

With the trio rounded out by Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis this movie is definitely one that will be purchased the first day it is available on DVD.

And I think I might need another Bachelor Party.....

Summer Reading - Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life

So luckily I decided not to take any classes this summer so I have a lot of free time on my hands, if you don't count work, moving, and getting married.

However, I do have time and I hate to sit idly by and not learning something new. So with that in mind I have developed my own summer reading list. I just completed the first one and like my expedition through the summer movie schedule, I will review here for the benefit of all the readers out there.

The first book on my list was The Snowball: Warren Buffet and the Business of Life, by Alice Schroeder. I think everyone knows who Warren Buffet is, at least everyone in the business world, and especially those who monitor the machinations of the "market" each and every day, how ever one defines it to be. Before reading this tome and it is a tome at 922 pages, more than a simple novel or biography, what I knew of Mr. Buffett was merely his skill at investments and picking stocks. After digging through the numerous pages on his background, motivations and actions I now see a man that although has been renowned for his success in business and investments, has not been controlled by it. Mr. Buffett has never let his determination and ambition sway his moral center, or compromise his belief in ethical, honest business.

What defines Mr. Buffet more than his vast wealth is his dedication to conducting business with such honesty and forthrightness one could almost forget the antithesis of Mr. Buffet, the character of Gordon Gecko from the movie Wall Street, whom so many traders and investors have come to admire.

In the current market climate it is especially relevant to take a deeper look at the investors that in many ways have taken the economy to the depths it is today. I think the rarity of an investor like Mr. Buffet and the preponderance of investors and traders like the fictional Mr. Gecko is the cause of the irrational and dishonest actions viewed recently.

Where Mr. Gecko uses illegal and illicit information to research potential investments, Mr. Buffett uses his insight, intelligence, and diligently researches public information to arrive at his decisions. Mr. Gecko continually gains control of corporations with little thought or care about the continued operations of the company or the people employed by them. Throughout his history, Mr. Buffett has looked at corporations as long term investments, rather than short term personal monetary gains. Evidenced by his purchase of Berkshire Hathaway, Hochschild-Kohn, the Omaha Sun, and others Mr. Buffet always took human capital into consideration, not just financial capital.

It is interesting to read in the book that Mr. Buffett with all his billions could have maybe had even more if he hadn't made decisions simply because it was right, and not necessarily right for his bottom line.

Mr. Buffett not only expected the companies he invested in have a level of moral turpitude he demanded a high level of ethical behavior from himself as well. In his annual letter to his various partners in 1967, he stated a new principle by which they would all live and invest by:

"We will not seek out activity in investment options, even if offering splendid profit expectations, where major human problems appear to have a substantial chance of developing."

Why would a man who lived by the dollar and cents in his possession care about the human element? How often do we see that reflected in other business leaders today? If more managers and investors understood the human toll that their actions take each and every year, I doubt such stringent regulation would be necessary.

The honesty displayed by Mr. Buffett in both his motivations and his actions is an example for all who aim to contribute not just to themselves, a corporation, or the market, but to society. Mr. Buffet knows that the final determination of his "assets" will be the sum of much more than his nominal worth.

Overall, this deeper understanding of Warren Buffet was an engrossing read, and while the length can be daunting, it moves fast and is deeply engaging. It's possible you'll find his personal life more fascinating than his business life, and some times you'll have to decide which is which.

Summer Movies, Part 3: Terminator: Salvation

I saw this movie last week, but it took me awhile to process and objectively review this film. Coming out of the theater, I immediately dismissed its lack of plot and further development of the Terminator universe. My main beef with the movie was its choppy and out of sync editing, with little concrete transition from scene to scene. At some points it did make it difficult to even follow the story. But I guess that's what you get with a music video director...oh wait, I forgot, he did direct the Charlie's Angels movies, my mistake (you can tell how much I liked them).

I really don't want to spend a lot of time on this review, but I thought the acting of both Sam Worthington and Christian Bale was spot on, and I don't remember Ron Howard's daughter being that attractive. The action scenes were good, but again there was little underlying plot to tie them together.

I read online about some potential alternate endings, and they were actually where I thought Terminator was going. The cliche statements were ill placed and not delivered well, and the digitally enhanced Governator was not necessary.

And don't even get me started on a battlefield heart transplant with possibly not the best donor (from a blood type/tissue matching perspective...did no else think of that?!?).....

Today, but yesterday

I should have posted this yesterday, but like many of you I am busy.

The Today Show's ( the home for puff pieces) Matt Lauer hosted a nice old lady on the program. She seemed sweet until it dawned on me that this little grandma had just been released from prison for trying assassinate President Gerald Ford (not Chevy Chase) over 30 years ago.

Poor old lady, she had to "harden her heart" in prison as the eloquent yet not fully haired Mr. Lauer said. GIVE ME A BREAK. SHE TRIED TO KILL THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Why is she even on the show?!?!?!

Now I know the nice people at the Today Show are not smart enough to figure this out (especially Matt Lauer), but let's not give the floor to convicted terrorists and those guilty of treason.

Who's next? Ex Nazis and war criminals...poor Gitmo detainees...sheesh!

Stick to lost puppies and the weather Today Show. Don't take yourself too seriously, no one else does....

Me and the little lady found us a new place:

Another day over

Anyone else still watching 24?

I am, but it seems like the days are getting longer and longer...and the story gets more unbelievable. How many bad days can Jack Bauer have? My bad day:

THE FOLLOWING EVENTS TAKE PLACE BETWEEN 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM

Sock has a hole in it, have to switch feet so big toe does not push all the way through.

THE FOLLOWING EVENTS TAKE PLACE BETWEEN 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM

Even though I brought my lunch to work, I still go out because it's the third day in a row I will have to eat a ham sandwich.

THE FOLLOWING EVENTS TAKE PLACE BETWEEN 5:00 PM and 6:00PM

Traffic on I-35.

You see my point.

Note to Fox executives:
  • An action show does not require a cliffhanger 45 minutes before the end.....after that I'm bored
  • Don't tell us the procedure required to save Jack is "experimental" when you've already been marketing the next season
  • Just because you "can" insert the liberal viewpoint on torture and national defense in the form of femi-nazi Janean Garolofo doesn't mean you "should"
  • I could go on, but I prefer to leave you guessing until next season

Recent Review

In preparation for the upcoming movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (on the list of films I have to see this summer), IDW has relaunched the Joe mythos in a number of series. My favorite so far (I get them all), and sadly I think it's only a mini-series and not a full ongoing, is G.I. Joe: Cobra. Its' a classic take on the "world is gray" kind of guy, who can straddle both worlds, good and evil. Chuckles is a soldier deep undercover in what will become the terrorist operation COBRA. Excellent storytelling and in depth character study highlight this tale of a guy who has finally found his niche - amongst thugs and killers. The most recent issue, #4 shows truly the dedication of Chuckles as he does whatever is necessary (ala Jack Bauer) to get the job done.
The cover only begins to scratch the surface of what Chuckles is capable of in service of God and country. His final act of violence in this issue only serves as motivation for him to fulfill his goal of bringing COBRA down.

Pick this book up, as well as the other ongoing G.I. Joe titles....

Another blow

Mavs lost, don't want to talk about it.

Summer Movies, Part 2: Star Trek

Jeff's bLog, Stardate 200905 (spoilers follow)

Today I put on my t-shirt with the periodic table of elements (geek chic is in) and sat in a movie theater filled with my fellow nerds (we are taking over the world people) to see Star Trek.

First and foremost, I will admit I have always been a Star WARS fan, rather than a Star TREK fan (there is a big difference, which I continue to have to remind Ashley about, but that's ok, she's hot), but I LOVED this film. A great "reboot" for the series which just got plain stupid with Generations, and other fare of late (although IV, in which the plot was to travel back in time and save some whales was quite silly as well), with a phenomenal cast that both honored the past but made their own mark.

Chris Pine was great as Kirk, showing his disrespect for authority and more of his Lothario side than we saw with Mr. Shatner. Zachary Quinto portrayed Spock well, difficult to do with the original in the same film. However, the scenes were quite literally stolen by Karl Urban as Bones and Simon Pegg as Scotty. I've only seen Urban in more action-esque roles so it was good to see him actually get to act...and he really nailed the classic Bones lines. I have always been a big fan of Pegg since his Shaun of the Dead days, and his Scotty was humorous and quite enlivened.

The plot made sense (to me) and allowed the writers and producers to take some liberties with the classical Star Trek mythology. I'm fine with it, but then again I'm no Trekkie, although I am what is politely referred to as a "fanboy" since I had to go the opening weekend and I am somewhat of a nerd.

I was suprisingly moved (and in some cases almost to tears I'll admit) by some of the more emotional heavy scenes: the destruction of Vulcan, the loss of Spock's mother. But by far the real moment that got me choked up was five minutes in with the loss of Kirk's dad right at his moment of birth. Maybe my own history and fast-approaching future makes me more prone to this reaction during scenes of loss, love, and family.....I'll be a husband soon.....and I just thought the dialogue and emotions were masterfully done.

Overall the movie brought me the full range of my emotions, kept me enthralled, and made me ready for the next installment.
Warp speed Mr. Sulu.

Big day today

Mavs are back in Dallas, need to win this one....

Nuggets are a bunch of thugs.....

Summer Movies, Part 1: Wolverine

Nothing is better than the start of the summer movie season and 2009 looks to be one of the best. From May to August there is at least one movie a week that I HAVE to see.

Today, I began with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Wolverine is by far my favorite comic character, one of the deepest, most examined personalities in the history of the medium. His origin story and past are some of the most interesting stories in comics today. It was great to see Hugh Jackman bring this mutant to life in the X-Men series of films (albeit he is much taller than the little Canuck) with emotion and vigor.

The latest installment that uses portions of the great Origin miniseries and the vast history of Weapon X is an utter disappointment. It could have been so much more....

From the one-too-many cameos, to the butchering of the character of Deadpool, to the untimely and cheezy entrance of Professor X (although I have always loved Patrick Stewart in the role) this movie tried to take a little bite of the source material and turn it into more than necessary, when if they had only dug a little bit more the story would have presented itself.

I really can't say any more, I don't want to talk about it...

Next week: Star Trek

Recent TV

Being out of town a lot lately, it has taken me awhile to get caught up on all my shows.  (still have some Heroes episodes to watch).

Fringe and Lost are by far the best shows on television today.  I love the writing and the twists and turns each story takes.  Fringe especially is the new hit this year.  I think it could easily attain X-Files status with its episodic format while at the same time linking everything into one over arching story (The Observer = The Smoking Man?).

I think after some growing pains with the Oceanic 6 leaving the island, Lost has finally come back with an exciting story, as everyone is back on the mysterious island, just not all at the same time....  Some of the revelations about the Others, Widmore, Eli, Farraday, Ben, and the yet to be named new group from 316 (with their secret catchphrases) have made the plot very interesting and engaging as we are slowly putting all the pieces together.

Defection

So Senator Specter left to join the Dems yesterday...I'm fine with that being a moderate Dem myself (like some who still voted for McCain and has contributed to Lieberman's campaigns before).  I'm a big fan of the moderates who are hated by both the far left on MSNBC and the far right of talk radio.

Now I know the Democratic establishment is very happy about the possibility of a 60 seat super majority in the Senate (if Franken is finally elected, let him, he'll show himself to be a buffoon in two days...), but what they don't see is that now the Senator can dip in to those Democratic Senatorial war chests, and he only has to vote with them half the time (which he does already).

Either way, I'm glad there was a story out there other than the swine flu epidemic (SARS: The Sequel?).

Lost

OK, so last week I was a little confused by the abrupt disturbance in the time-space continuum (Doc Brown would be going insane!), but it looks like they'll have it covered.

Great season this year. Love the story lines, but it's one of those seasons where you have no idea which character to root for....

Except Sawyer. He's a bad ass.

France

Off to Paris this weekend for work, should be fun. I've never been off of the North American continent so this will be interesting.

It is for work but I should get to see the sights some. Ashley gave me her camera to take some pics....so I guess I HAVE to be a tourist, at least for a little while.

GM

Still can't get it through my head that the President can fire the CEO of GM.

It just doesn't make any sense. Mr. Waggoner, I wish you could have just accepted bankruptcy, restructured on your own terms, and not add to this Marxist nightmare by stepping aside.

AIG

Now I don't know how your company works but at mine, if the company doesn't do well, no one gets bonuses.

So how do AIG executives get bonuses when the company FAILED! Ridiculous!

Now, I don't condone the bonuses, but what's worse is the infantile Congress's reaction to them. I know we have a progressive tax system (although I would prefer a flat one) but we don't have a vindictive one. Our Congress's knee-jerk, ill thought, and poorly executed answer to AIG is a tax of 90%!

Be afraid America, if they can do it to them, they can do it to YOU.

Waves

As you and my millions of readers can tell some of these blogging spats come in waves. I did figure out how to email blogs during work, but I feel guilty about that. So I end up trying to remember all the things I wanted to blog about during the week and getting them down all at once.

Bracketology

How's every one's brackets looking? I lost 8 in the first round, lost 4 of my Sweet Sixteen before Saturday...not my best year but not my worst either.

I do have new found respect for the Cleveland State Vikings.

Productive Day

Got a lot done today.

I got a wedding band for the big day. Picked out a tux (Ashley and I went back and forth on the color of my tie and vest...you know who won that one, she did) and narrowed our first dance music down to four or five options.

So I've been much more productive than I thought I would be today.

Thank You Former Mr. President

Did my taxes last night, and W.'s tax system was still in place. Gotta love it!

Little worried about next year....

The Parade

Another year, another parade, another day that was fun, crazy, and little hazy....

Soooo this year Ashley made me promise no flasks, no bourbon, at least not at 10AM. Thankfully, a thoughtful member of our crew who will remain nameless to protect her identity (I'll call her "Coach") was charitable enough to offer me some of hers. I remained true to my word and Ashley has been with me 100% more St. Patrick's Day Parades than any other woman. I hope she know how special she is. :)

I do love Bloody Marys.....

One good turn.....

So obviously Ashley went with me to see Watchmen this weekend. And although she is not what you would call a "comic fan," she did appear to enjoy, or so I was told.

Because relationships are all about compromise I was encouraged to make the following deal for her active participation this weekend:
  • 3 chick flicks in the theater
  • 4 chick flicks purchased on DVD
  • Flowers

Already took care of one, saw Confessions of a Shopaholic this weekend. I don't think I'll ever let Ashley go to the mall by herself again......

Thanks Keith

Many thanks to Keith of Keith's Comics in Dallas.

We attended his opening night showing of Watchmen this Friday night at the Studio Movie Grill and he puts on one hell of a show. Even though I know Keith had little to do with the production of the movie itself (which was a phenomenal living representation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' groundbreaking book, a true genre creating work of fiction) his little touches made the night more memorable than the regular movie going experience.

Giveaways, drawings, and a 30+ minute trailer reel of all the movies us geeks want to see this summer - Star Trek, Wolverine, Terminator, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the list goes on an on....

So thanks Keith, I'll see you Wednesdays!

Lost

Not sure about last night's episode, a lot of questions...especially about Widmore's past on the island and his history with Ben.

This guy's just an asshole

Just because the UK didn't let him doesn't mean we have to take him back.

In case anyone missed it

Sunday

Does anyone watch the Oscars anymore? I know Nielsen said the broadcast was up, but I just don't care. I used to get into it and place bets on who would win what...now I just wait until tomorrow and see who won, that way I can miss the over the top show and the whiny political speeches.

Quote of the day

Was listening to Dennis Miller talk about the new mortgage bailout bill on the radio earlier
How this whole thing is about the American people footing the bill for those that bought when they shouldn't, while there are some people out there that need help:

"Help the helpless and forget the clueless."

Agreed.

Today's News, pt. 2

Another interesting story:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,475046,00.html

I don't even know where to begin...

Today's news, pt.1

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/18/stimulus.spending.chart/index.html

Lots of stuff happening these days. I say "stuff" rather than my preferred term for the actions of government circa 1984 (the book, not the year). Check out the link above, maybe you've got a piece of the pie as well...maybe your job will be one of the ones saved...

Although I'm not sure how the following will "stimulate" anything...

$75 million for the Smithsonian
$747 million for the National Park Service
$100 million for the Administration on Aging
$120 million for community service employment for older Americans (isn't community service volunteering?)

Are you stimulated? Yeah? Well then get a room!

Review: Secret Warriors #1

As a long-time fan, it was mind blowing to see Nick Fury's return to the MU during Secret Invasion this summer. Now with a team of unknowns he's out to save the world all on his own, without the help of the usual band of Earth's mightiest heroes...

With equal parts espionage, action, and a wee bit of paranoia, Secret Warriors sets a new standard in the world run by villains. Even our current President makes a guest appearance as Fury tells him what's what, proving that he's above everything and everyone.

Looking forward to how this book evolves, both as its own story and how impacts a larger universe.

I thought he was going to pay my mortgage

Hmmmm $400 is going to buy a lot of groceries at Wal*Mart

On countdown to March 6th

With the increasing multitude of Watchmen trailers on television my expectations for this film are growing. I hate reviewing a movie in my head before I see it, so I'm trying to turn my head every time another promo comes on...

It's not working.

The Loon

Thanks to all who came out last night for the annual Jeff Harrell birthday bash. It was great to see everyone and hear how old I am.

I think I will feel the effects of the cheese fries long after the bourbon is out of my system.

The Valentine's that almost wasn't

So being the prepared romantic that I am I ordered Ashley (my fiance) her Valentine's Day roses over two weeks ago...she knew they were coming because I had to tell her to work from home to be there to get them.

Anyways, they never showed...I had to call the florist and inquire and they finally delivered them around 6PM tonight..they had FORGOTTEN her flowers. I had already printed off my online bank statement where my credit card had been charged.

But all is well, she has her flowers and we just got back from happy hour. If you've never been to Public House on Lower Greenville you're missing out.

To all those out there in Internet land - we will be at the Loon (the greatest bar in Dallas, nay I say the world - screw you Ibiza/Monaco/Rio/etc.) to celebrate my 30th. Bring on the stiff drinks and cheese fries!

Countdown to the end

Roughly 25 hours left in my 20s....I'll spend most of them asleep or at work....great.

30 here I come!

Getting caught up

With a daily schedule like everyone else has I am constantly watching my television shows on DVR or TiVo (I have one of each).

Last night I got caught up on Fringe, one of my new favorite shows this season. It has more than filled the whole once occupied by X-Files. Fringe is fantastic, I don't think I have been disappointed by any of the episodes so far. And Walter Bishop is the greatest mad scientist on either the small or big screen....Dr. Frankenstein with a sense of humor and a cow.

For those of you that follow the show and saw this week's episode, I have one word: typewriter. One of the best endings ever.

For those of you interested, my weekly schedule:

Sunday:
Big Love (HBO)
Family Guy (Fox)

Monday:
How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
24 (Fox)
Heroes (NBC)
Trust Me (USA)

Tuesday:
Fringe (Fox)

Wednesday:
Lost (ABC)

Thursday:
The Office (NBC)

Don't forget to set your Tivos, DVRs, etc.

Good movie

Rewatching Blade Runner from 1982...when sci fi movies still had character and plot development, before CGI.

Still an all time great. One thing though, set in 2019 they've got flying cars, robots all over the place, people living on other planets...you think we're going to get all of that in ten years?

I want my flying car.....

New Tarantino film

http://movies.yahoo.com/premieres/11990378

Big fan of Tarantino's work....Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill (vol1 for the action, vol2 for the dialogue)......really excited about this one.

Teaser trailer released for Inglorious Basterds, check it out at the link above...

Class tonight: rant and a video

So one of my classes this semester is on business ethics, it's a required course. Which is fine. The class seems to be more on geopolitics, environmental issues, and some times possible conspiracy theories.

I actually like my professor, he's very intelligent and an engaging speaker, but you can tell why he's in academia, and not in the business (aka "real) world...and this is coming from the child of a PhD....

Not really sure what his point is most of the time but tonight we watched a documentary called "The Corporation." About the birth of the legal rights of companies, all the harm they cause to the planet, its people and its animals.....which is understandable but "companies" don't do anything, the people who run the companies do. So the people who don't like companies really just don't like people....

And many of the interviews were with Zinn, Chomsky, and Moore....quite the triumvirate....could have just as easily been Lenin, Trotsky, and Mao...
